What Is
Play Therapy
Play is the natural language of children, and is a metaphor, or symbolic representation and expression of what is going on in their minds and in their lives. Just as adults use verbal language to express themselves in therapy, children use toys and play. Play therapists are trained to attune to, understand, and help children make sense of what they are showing us through their play.
Parents will work closely with their child’s play therapist to determine goals and assess progress. Children who attend play therapy sessions regularly will likely experience a reduction in the concerning behaviors that led the parents to seek services. They will also likely experience positive outcomes such as improvement in behavioral regulation, a broader worldview, increased emotional vocabulary, and boosted self-esteem.
